The three strands of a marketing campaign are :
- advertising
- promotion
- publicity
Advertising = directly selling the artist /song /album
this included tv adverts,magazine adverts,cd covers,billboards.
Promotion-competitions and merchandise used to promote star image
this includes a fragrance ,adverts on tv ,slots on radios ,tv slots ,clothing lines, albums , music videos.
Publicity-is anything that the artists has not had to pay for that promotes themselves
this includes shout outs on radio shows, stories in magazines ,viral videos ,social networking.
Examples of each of these are Britney Spears :
This is her website
http://www.britneyspears.com/index.aspx
Some of her most recent publicity has been because she was a judge on the X-factor
this gives her a lot of publicity and any artists shown on the X-factor's sales shoot up so her songs and albums will have higher selling rates , she will also perform and advertise her upcoming tour

Right away on her website there is clear advertising asking you to add her to your circle on googel +
and to buy her new app to keep you updated on her life.
Britney has a massive fan base who do a lot of the publishes themselves through youtube reviews and videos,
also Britney has a twitter ,facebook,my space and many other social networking sites.
These give her lots of free publicity and Britney's song are on many of the hit radio stations throughout the day, for example she was played 6 times on smash hits in 2 hours of her new single coming out.
Fake stories told to the media keep them interested on her also then saying these stories are fake gives a certain mystery to her http://www.britneyspears.com/BSAlert.aspx?IconID=3
Another exarmple is Cherilal Chole

At the top of her website there are options to what you want to look at. These include music, video, newsletter, store and others.
Also at the top of her page are the icons that link to social networking sites for example
facebook, twitter, youtube and others. This gives her a bigger fan base and it enables her to share information more easily with her fans.
When you click on store, a message pops up saying you can now pay in euros. This means she is now selling her merchandise around Europe. This gives her even more fans and they are able to access her merchandise more easily.

On her website there are many videos and pictures of her on shows at prime time and there are links to buy her concert tickets.
Her pages that show stories are short and snappy to appeal to a younger audience http://www.cherylcole.com/cheryl-on-graham-norton/
SOCIAL MEDIA WEBSITES AND THEIR AFFECTED ON THE MUSIC INDUSTRY
Social Media has popped up mainly in the last 5 years and it has boomed. It has taken over as a new way of communication and has made it really easy for everyone to know everything about you, so what does this mean to the music industry ?
Well, it means that every single pop-star or rock star and person in the music industry in the world can say when ,where, who, what and why things are happening. This is really good for those pop/rock stars, because it's free publicity and all their fans can see everything.
They can show all there new merchandise and music, post videos
and make sure that everyone in the whole world knows who they are.
By writing comments on facebook, twitter, my-space and other social networking they can get a message out around the world ,by doing this they can gain more fans but if they say something controversial they can lose fans
