What jobs can you have in the music industry ?

There are many jobs you can have within the music industry. There are many departments and people who make up the industry

The 4 main record labels

What does a record label do ?

The record label  finds the artist, they sign the artist  and develop their music look and other aspects of their career. They then make a profit from the artist when they start to make money, they also help promote and kick start their career.

What does  a music publisher do?

Any piece of recorded music consists of two copyrights: the song or composition and the actual recording. The former is typically administered or owned by a music pubisher and the latter by a record label.
To explain it another way, music publishers sign songwriters their rosters and composers too , while record labels sign artists.

Today's technology allows music publishers to license their music via:
  • Physical formats (records, CDs, etc)
  • Digitally (MP3s, streamed via internet)
  • Music video/TV
  • Advertisements
  • Films
  • Games
  • Live concerts and shows

The UK music business is composed of rich, diverse and passionate organisations. Record companies are one part of a complex business that includes self employed individuals, small businesses and large multi-national companies.

The business can be broadly split into four sectors: recording, song writing and publishing, live music and artist management. The BPI's industry maps will help you get to grips with the different processes and organisations involved in each sector.

An artist is singed to a label, for example Rhianna  is signed by Def Jam recordings which is a subsidiary label to universal. Other subsidiary labels owned by Universal are Mercury records and Geffen .
Universal has a team that works with each of the subsidiary labels which look after each artist and have a large amount of people working at the same time to make the record label work, for example some of the people working are accountant ,lawyers, music video producers ,human resources and many more .

Universal funds these subsidiary labels and and take a percentage of the profit made on record sales , touring, concerts ,etc. The major label Universal is owned by a parent compete called Vivendi which funds them and also take  a large percentage of the profits from Universal and all their subsidiary record labels which take a percentage of the profits on the artist themselves.
